Wakasagi Tsuri (Ice fishing for Wakasagi)
For some laid back winter recreation, please consider ice fishing for wakasagi. Wakasagi, or Japanese pond smelt, can be found in large shoals under frozen lakes(around January to the middle of March). Just cut a hole in the ice, put your bait in and wait for these easy-to-catch fish to bite.

Japanese sweets – Chimaki
“Chimaki” is a rice dumpling wrapped in bamboo ,banana, or reed leaves. We eat it in “Tango-no-Sekku” (Boys’ Festival, May 5th). “Chimaki” came to Japan from China in the early Heian era.

You can try making chimaki (The process of wrapping uncooked rice can be challenging) The chimaki is then steamed for 50 minutes to 1 hour until the glutinous rice and other ingredients are fully cooked.

Akabeko Painting Experience
Akabeko is the traditional craftwork and toys in Aizu area. In the past, people made the red cow doll for wishing their kids to be strong like the cow(the cow that helped constructing Fukuman Kokuzodo temple in Yanaizu in Fukushima Prefecture in 807).

Wall Art Project in Inawashiro and Nakanosawa Onsen Town
We find fun things to do by finding the wall art by the German artist TONA in Inawashiro City and Nakanosawa Onsen town, Fukushima Prefecture. TONA has produced 27 works in Inawashiro City. It has already spread east, west, south and north of Inawashiro Town. Obviously, permission from the owner of the wall, school, or government office.

TONA, is an anonymous artist from Hamburg who started with graffiti in 1999, began using stencils in 2002. You also can see his wall painting works around in India.

Japanese Kokeshi Dolls
Japanese Kokeshi Dolls are handmade wooden dolls distinguished by a single trunk and head, with their faces and clothing painted on. Traditional kokeshi dolls originated in northern Japan during the middle of the Edo period around 300 years ago. It is said that artisans who were skilled in woodworking began crafting these hand-carved and painted wooden dolls to sell to people who were visiting the many hot springs in the region.

In Fukushima, there are Kokeshi painting classes, and you can create your original masterpiece😉. Let’s join the class. If you do not have time but want to have one for your love, you can go to buy at Nakanosawa Onsen town. There, many ryokans and souvenir shop have the dolls for sale.
