In the heart of Aizu, Fukushima, Japan, one such tradition continues to thrive — the way of the Samurai. And we are truly proud to be part of preserving and passing on this powerful cultural heritage.

Tour : Aizu Samurai Experience at Ookawaso – Where History Comes Alive

If you ever find yourself in Aizu, one experience we wholeheartedly recommend is becoming a Samurai — just for a day. Yes, really. It’s not just dress-up; it’s a deep dive into a historical world full of discipline, elegance, and strength.

At this Samurai Experience, you’ll be dressed in a traditional Japanese kimono-style outfit, provided with all necessary props, and guided step by step — all in English — by the professional team from Samurai Kamui, a world-renowned performance and action group.

You may even recognize the name Tetsuro Shimaguchi, the founder of Samurai Kamui, who choreographed the unforgettable sword-fighting scenes in Kill Bill: Volume 1. His art form, known as Kengido, blends real martial technique with stunning, theatrical swordplay.

During the session, you’ll learn the basics of Samurai movement, practice your sword forms, and step fully into the role of a fearless warrior. You’ll also have a chance to take amazing photos and videos — perfect memories to bring home from your journey into Japan’s storied past.

I was lucky enough to join one of these sessions myself — and managed to capture some truly incredible photos for our guests. They were thrilled, and have been messaging us ever since to share their excitement.

Stay Where Tradition Meets Tranquility – Ashinomaki Onsen Ookawaso

To complete your Samurai experience, I also highly recommend staying at the same place where the activity is held — on the 2nd floor dojo of the beautifully traditional Ashinomaki Onsen Ookawaso, a Japanese-style ryokan (inn) nestled in the serene mountains of Aizu. If you’re looking to fully feel the atmosphere of Japan, this is the place to be. Wearing a yukata, enjoying a multi-course kaiseki dinner, and soaking in the peaceful rhythm of the countryside… it’s more than just a stay — it’s a cultural immersion.

And as if that weren’t enough to immerse you in Japanese tradition, Ashinomaki Onsen Ookawaso also offers an absolutely mesmerizing shamisen performance — a traditional three-stringed Japanese instrument.

Performed by elegantly dressed women in beautiful kimono, the live show features soulful renditions of folk songs, echoing through the grand halls of the ryokan. The performance lasts around two hours, creating a timeless atmosphere that makes you feel as if you’ve stepped back into old Japan. It’s not just music — it’s a cultural moment, rich in history and emotion.Perfect to enjoy after a relaxing onsen soak or a delicious kaiseki dinner.

The hotel offers both Japanese-style rooms with tatami mats and futons, as well as Western-style rooms for those who prefer familiar comforts. But one of the true highlights? The private rooms with both onsen (hot spring) and sauna inside — perfect for guests who value privacy and want to enjoy total relaxation at any time of the day or night. It is Tsukimitei-VIP Twin Room.

The rooms are designed with light wood interiors, creating a bright and calming atmosphere. Just outside your window, the gentle flow of the Ogawa River brings a peaceful view — a perfect escape back to nature.

Here, the sauna uses heated natural stones, and when water is gently poured over them, it creates a burst of warm steam that fills the room — not just with heat, but with the subtle, soothing aroma of natural wood. The fragrance is incredibly calming — a soft, earthy scent that enhances the feeling of relaxation and connection with nature. It’s not just a sauna — it’s a full-body, mind-clearing escape.

The private in-room onsen at Ashinomaki Onsen Ookawaso offers a spacious, authentic hot spring experience in total comfort. The natural mineral water is known for its beauty benefits — leaving your skin feeling soft, smooth, and refreshed. A perfect way to relax, rejuvenate, and enjoy a true taste of Japan.

The hotel shuttle bus from/to Ashinomaki onsen station is available too! I really enjoyed my vacation in Aizu so much.
